Pain After a Dental Implant: What’s Normal?

Dental implants are an invasive procedure, and though you may not feel any pain during your treatment due to numbing agents and sedation, you may experience soreness and pain afterward. At Nova Dental, we want you to be informed about what to expect after your implant placement surgery, so we’ve created this guide to help you navigate the healing process.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind about the pain after a dental implant and whether what you’re experiencing is normal:

5-7 Days After Placement

Thanks to modern advances in oral surgery, dental implant surgery can be made virtually painless with powerful numbing agents and sedation options. However, the procedure involves opening up a hole in your gum and jaw bone, so this will naturally cause some pain and discomfort once the sedation and numbing agents wear off. For about 5-7 days after your placement procedure, you can expect to experience soreness.

Your gums will heal and your sutures will fall out if they’re self-dissolving. Most patients stop feeling much pain after about 7 days, and your mouth should be completely symptom-free after two weeks post-surgery. If this isn’t the case, give us a call to discuss your symptoms and schedule a follow-up appointment.

Signs of Early Implant Failure

  • Infection at the implant site: If you don’t take proper care of your implant while you heal, and infection may form in your gums where the implant was inserted. Smoking, auto-immune diseases, and poor oral hygiene can all lead to infection after implant surgery.
  • Implant micro-movements: Micro-movements can occur if your implant isn’t fully stabilized in your gums. This is normal during the first few days after implant placement, but over time it should become more and more stable. If not, don’t hesitate to reach out and schedule a follow-up appointment at Nova Dental.
  • Allergic reaction: Most dental implants are made from titanium alloy. We will check your medical history for this allergy before beginning your treatment, and if one exists we will use an alternative material. However, symptoms of an allergy include swelling, loss of taste, and perhaps a tingling sensation. If this occurs, give us a call to schedule a follow-up appointment.
