How Do Crowns Work?

Understanding Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a type of dental prosthesis designed to cover up and protect damaged teeth. A crown is a false tooth that is shaped just like your natural tooth. Your existing enamel will be trimmed, then the crown will be bonded directly to the surface of your tooth, covering it up all the way down the gum line.

Crowns are usually used if your tooth has been broken or cracked due to oral trauma, or to treat teeth that are severely decayed. Crowns are also ideal for restoring teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy. More rarely, they can be used for cosmetic purposes if veneers or dental bonding is not recommended for a particular tooth.

Replace Missing Teeth

Understanding Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a restorative treatment used to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges use a set of two dental crowns, which attach to healthy “abutment” teeth. Between these two crowns, one or more false teeth (pontics) can be attached using metal bridgework. These false teeth rest in the gaps where your missing teeth used to be, restoring your smile and your bite.

Bridges are a good intermediate option for restoring your smile. They are typically a bit more costly than partial dentures, but they last a lot longer. While they are not as durable or long-lasting as dental implants, they’re strong, they look natural, and they are more affordable than implants.

What To Expect

The Treatment Process

The basic treatment process for receiving both crowns and bridges is quite similar. Treatment usually takes at least 2 appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks. At your first appointment, Dr. Guldalian will need to prepare your teeth. Your mouth will be numbed, then each tooth that is getting a crown will be trimmed to remove damaged enamel, and prepare a stable surface for the prosthetic.

Then, Dr. Guldalian will take impressions of your mouth and attach temporary crowns to each tooth. You’ll be sent home, and Dr. Guldalian will work closely with a trusted dental lab to create your crown or bridge.
In about 2-3 weeks, your crown or bridge will arrive at our office. You’ll try it on, and Dr. Guldalian will make sure that it fits properly. If everything looks good, it will be bonded into place permanently with dental cement.
